When the days are short and snow hides the dirt and make the water Lake Tahoe WAY to cold to swim, you did the only thing you can do: go skiing! There are fourteen ski resorts around Lake Tahoe in both California and Nevada. There are thousands of hotel and motel rooms, you can not swing a dead cat without hitting a gourmet, or favors a funky restaurant, and there is more music, theater, shows, gambling and amenities than you probably know what to do with.

But relax. It’s simple. Follow the two steps for the best winter vacation ever had: 1) go to Lake Tahoe. 2) go skiing! Everything else will come naturally.

Getting to Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is easy to find. If you’re flying (and you do not have their own helicopter), the nearest airport with good service is Reno Tahoe International Airport. All major carriers fly in there including the beloved Southwest Airlines. From Reno the closest Tahoe ski resort just 30 minutes away (Mt. Rose and Diamond Peak), and the furthest is almost nothing more than an hour. Fly to Reno also puts you at an advantage because most of the traffic coming from the Sacramento and San Francisco, so tourist congestion is minimal.

From Sacramento or San Francisco take U.S. Hwy 50 East to South Lake Tahoe, California and the casinos in Stateline, Nevada and Heavenly, Kirkwood or Sierra at Tahoe, or take Interstate 80 through Truckee to Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Donner Ski Ranch, Sugar bowl , Northstar or Homewood. Good weather can be found at weather.com (http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USCA0584?from=search_city), NOAA.gov and snotel (http://www.wcc.nrcs.usda. gov / snotel / California / california.html).

Check traffic and snow conditions before you go on Caltrans (http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/), NDOT (http://www.nevadadot.com/traveler/roads/) and Magnifeye ( http: / / www.magnifeye.com/).

Tahoe Terrain and Snow

Lake Tahoe is big: 22 miles long and 12 miles wide. Along 72 km of the coast ski conditions may vary from north (Northstar at Tahoe) to south (Kirkwood), so it helps to track the weather and snowfall rate. If you’re into groomers and perfect corduroy, or neck deep powder in the trees, check the snow report on the website of each resort and hit one with the most new snow.

Most of the resorts have terrain parks, and usually more than one. Heavenly has several jumps, including beginner, intermediate and advanced, rails and boxes for all skiers and snowboarders.

The resort should you go to? Well that’s complicated. Since everything at Tahoe is really great, it can be challenging to find a resort that is right for you. Huge resorts, Heavenly, Squaw, and Kirkwood, offer fancy dining, big vertical relief, and incredible on-mountain facilities. A small, Homewood, Diamond Peak and Mt. Rose, offers a lower key experience that might be good for beginners or people who want to experience everything Tahoe. Each mountain has its specialties, secret powder stashes and amazing views of the lake.

Outback Ski

Although there are some best ski and snowboard resort in the world, there are FAR more mountains to slide around Tahoe than you can reach by the end of a chair lift ride. Each peak around the Tahoe Basin, however, can be reached at the end of the climb.

Whether by snowshoe, crampon and ice ax or ski tour you can reach endless untracked mountains and couloirs from the Pacific Crest in the Desolation Wilderness on the West coast for the Carson Range above Reno on the east. Many resorts also have hikeable inland plains, like the Milkyway Bowl, at Heavenly which gives you a few more feet of vertical for a little extra effort. Always check for up-to-date avalanche, snowfall and weather forecasts for the entire Tahoe back country of the Sierra Avalanche Center (http://www.sierraavalanchecenter.org/) before you go out of bounds.

Elevator, Trams and Gondolas

Tahoe is a land of six-pack chairlift at high speed. We have a gondola, funitels, and trams along with a lifetime supply of high-speed chairlifts 6 people. Resorts here are fully modern with the latest technology and as rich skiing history, like the old Trams at Heavenly and Squaw Valley. Skiing in Tahoe is the experience, fully modern, fast and fun. Tremendous uphill capacity in the ski resort leaves you with minimal down time.

On-mountain facilities

What is it? You want a little down time? Understood. Skiing on to the Maestro endless powder run down or can be exhausting. You need to recharge now and then. Do not worry, no matter where you are located in the resort here you’re never far from a bite to eat. Mid mountain lodges, top of the mountain lodges abound with gourmet dining, and drinking straight from the stars walk with view of ski slopes and lakes and no shortage of wine and beer.

Tahoe Lodging

Sure, you can sleep in your car at the base of the ski runs after eating a meal-bum-gourmet crackers and ketchup, but why now live a little? You want either to yourself, that’s why you’re here.

As a year-round vacation destination, Lake Tahoe has thousands of hotels and motels to choose from after a great day on the slopes. If you are hungry there is enough food to feed tens of thousands of companies! Rates of lodging can be found to keep your budget happy even at a hotel close to the slopes!

In a competitive vacation market such as Tahoe, resorts are always working with hotels to offer ski and lodging packages to get the best deal for your trip. Whether you are skiing or snowboarding, you can bundle your lodging lift tickets and rental equipment to a great deal, so you spend less money and more time having fun.

Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe, in California and Nevada, is a world-class winter destination mentioned in the same breath as Vail, Park City, and Banff. Snow falls. Elevator runs. Come hit the slopes!

I finally found Internet access here in Graz. Not the easiest thing I have to admit. Had to ask 3 people and finally went to the tourist info who competently directed me to an Internet Cafe.

The last few days have been interesting. The first day sister in law and I took a little tour through my home town of Weiz, and in 8 years that I was not here there are a lot of changes. The new building, renovation, reorganization of traffic. It almost felt like being in a different place.

On Saturday my brother, sister-in-law and I started our little weekend tour to Slovenia and Italy. We were driving on the highway to the border with Austria Slovenia (only about 45 minutes from my home town). Then we continued on for about an hour and 15 minutes to the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana. We parked by the river and walk a little to the central market. The place was just packed and you can buy anything from fresh bread to meat, sausages, fish, vegetables, fruits, flowers. People with full force, even shopping for candles for the annual trip to the cemetery. After all it is a weekend of All Saints and people take their cemetery duties very seriously in Central Europe.

We walked through the old town with cobbled streets, stoned and then start a steady climb up the castle hill. Above is an old castle with a renovated tower that can be accessed. You get to the top via a winding staircase is really exciting and once outside, there is a beautiful 360 degree view of the surrounding area, including the limestone outcrops of the Julian Alps.

After a quick lunch at a local pizzeria we continued our journey towards the coast of Slovenia. I can not keep my eyes open because I was so tired, so I spent a good part of interesting landscape. The Postojna mountain pass is always interesting and after that we were close to the Adriatic coast. We drove by the Slovenian cities of Koper, Izola and Strunjan and eventually ended up in Piran.

Piran (formerly Pirano – in Italian) is a city that has changed hands many times among many people. Most of the core built by the Venetians and on the hill above town there is a clock tower whose style strongly reminiscent of the Campanile in Venice. In addition to the harbor is a beautiful square with houses dating back several centuries. We checked into the Hostel-Hotel Garni Val, very similar to youth hostels, where we could stay for Euro 20/night. My sister in law and I stayed in a room with 4 beds (2 of them bunkbeds), and the sink / bath in the hall.

We went on a beautiful road through the town, the road rough-stoned again good, the weather was beautiful, we had blue sky with about 20 degrees. Of course we climb the belltower which gave us a beautiful 360 degree views of the city and the Adriatic coast to the north, all the way past Trieste. I almost had a heart attack when the bell tower clock started ringing right next to my ear. They were unusually hard.

We have a nice dinner in the evening at a restaurant called “Delfin”. My brother of course had fish, one of the local specialties. I eventually took stomach virus and on Sunday and Monday I was dealing with some very unpleasant symptoms. Sunday morning we checked out and continued our journey towards Italy.

After about 30 minutes driving and basically no border check at the Slovenian-Italian border we ended up in Trieste, a city of 270,000 people, and the industrial city and major port on the northern tip of the Adriatic Sea. Trieste used to be part of the Austro-Hungarian empire and the architecture strongly reminiscent of many Austrian cities. We visited the main square by City Hall, check out the “Canale Grande”, an outlet from the sea that stretches into the city.

At Harbourfront is there some kind of exhibition by the Italian Navy, Military and various police organizations. 3 war ships were parked in the harbor and it seems people can go on tour in warships. All sorts of military and police vehicles were parked in the harbor area and sailors, soldiers and policemen and women are available to answer questions, pose for photos etc.

After our brief stop we continue the tour in Trieste in northern Italy and stopped in the town of Cividale, a medieval city that was originally built by the Germanic tribes of Langobards. It also has an old town core with ancient churches, rough-stoned streets and narrow view of the most famous is “Tempietto”, a small temple which was built hundreds of years ago by Langobards.

After lunch (where I could not eat a delicious Italian food because my stomach problems) we continued our way home through the Italian Val Canale, past Udine, Tolmezzo towards the Austrian border. Been raining for several days and it was still pouring and all the mountain streams are very close to overflowing. Waterfalls overflowing with water shooting down from all the major mountains and rivers, Tagliamento, looked like it would flood the area in the very near future.

Approximately 3.5 hours later we finally arrived back home in Weiz, after driving through torrential rain. Sunday night and yesterday I had to take it easy because my stomach was still bothering me a lot. Today I finally let go, take my rental car at the airport in Graz and I have spent the last 2 or 3 hours rediscovering my university town. I checked out the castle hill (Schlossberg) in the middle of town, walk to the Uhrturm (clock tower), the symbol of Graz, and see all the remnants of an old medieval fortress castle on the hill. I also walked through the city center, in the Hauptplatz (main square with the market, which also houses City Hall) and finally, after some extended searching, ended up in Internet cafes.

So the last few days have been quite exciting, Austria, Slovenia, Italy. The beauty of Europe are the small distances between all the various places. A perfect place for sightseeing lovers.

Before any of my recent trip to Bulgaria, I was surfing the Internet for information about the country in general. I came across a line on a property website that is claimed to “Bulgaria is like Spain 30 years ago”. This got me thinking … … …

When I was in my early teens, I traveled through Europe with my sister and parents every summer. We’ll just leave without a clear plan of where we were going to end, but a rough idea of when we will return, which is basically when we come down to our last pound note!

We do not have the luxury of me or my children take for granted today as a seasoned traveler – like the crisp clean hotel bed and room service. We both have a long shelf-ladened roof, piled high with camping equipment and clothing, or if we were a little better that summer, we have a second hand caravan attach to the back of our old car. I remember the caravan always be resold to tide us over while Dad went back to work.

I vividly remember one summer, when my father had been welded together two clever bread van – yes bread and make their van into a camper van, but the really clever bit is, when we arrived at the camp site, the rear sliding out , to provide two times the living room and bedroom – though not very good for “street credibility” of the two teens cool 70 – we definitely have fun.

My point is, we see and experience on those adventures, some of the most traditional and original from France, Italy and almost all of Spain.

So, if Bulgaria like Spain 30 years ago? Well, in my opinion – yes, in many ways … … … … …

The roads for example – in Spain, their road dual carriageways simple, poorly maintained and rarely. Until this year – a very similar path Bulgaria – where you expect to find a sturdy highway you may find a two-laned, pot hole ridden, suitable for cars, not feasible to asses the car never mind – and in-ground, donkey more common! But this year, I am pleased to note, that with EU funding of new highway is nearly completed and much of the main arterial road has now re-emerged – but “four by four” transportation is still the most commonly used in ancient rural areas is still an ass and carts!
Just as the Spanish youth.

Toilet – I remember many tears in my youth, where I have embarrassed crouched behind a tree, on the dusty roadside Spain, with my bottom area exposed through each child giggling doe-eyed insect or Spanish, because I can not travel farther to find British style toilets to sit! We have traveled many miles away, because I have stubbornly refused to use the traditional Spanish “squat pots” – smelly hole in the ground, with a porcelain tray with dirty footprints on either side, giving you clues as to where to put your feet! Yuck! But I wonder, is the tree is better?
Over the last three years I have traveled the length and breadth of Bulgaria, on my business trip – not looking for English-style toilets to sit, but certainly hope I can find one! Miles away, I should refuse to visit them “squat pots”, but I am happy to report that they are now cottoning on – lots of small cafes and bars on the edge of rural roads have now been re-updated, and you can find more and more “proper” toilet “, and at tourist sites, it is not unusual to go look for your own personal” tree “!

The people – one thing that stands out from my childhood holiday memory is of people in Spain. They are always so eagar for fun, especially when you escape to the countryside. I remember many occasions when we are given the fruits of the trees and drink from the village, although there is no cafe to talk about, people really want to meet with us, to try and chat to us and always shake hands – the way that they can brag to friends and relatives that they have met with a stranger! Currently Bulgaria is very similar.

When I travel in Bulgaria, from village to village, acquire property and land, I had the good fortune to meet many of Bulgaria – especially the older generation, were grandmothers and grandads left to take care of plants. You can see them in the summer especially, bent double from the year hoeing the ground that they tend to father and grandfather. Working away at their pieces of Wellies, with 80 year old girl brought them a glass of home made RAKIA or beer – they broke up to tell you, proud, how many generations have been plowing the fields, how many brothers and sisters they have left and push upon you the fruits of their work – literally, the biggest ball of garlic I’ve ever seen, apples, plums, carrots – you name it they grow it. I think when you remember that they get the equivalent of less than 10 pounds per month in retirement, they have to grow everything and anything they can, either eating or exchange with their neighbors. This is the old way of life, the hard way and un-comfortable life, but also a calm and un-complicated lives – many of us, who rush from one crisis to another, watching the clock, reporting to a boss, struggling the bill, look for this kind of direction quieter lifestyle for our early retirement.

Many of my clients, while not want to spend the generation of agricultural land, of seeking peace and tranquility that comes with rural life, whether it is in Spain of yesteryear, or today’s Bulgaria, the chance to settle in some of the small villages only 30 or 40 minutes from the beach has never been greater. From as little as £ 8,000 or £ 9,000, an Englishman who settled in the villages and breath life back into the havens. Renovating and building properties, together with their neighbors and friendly thank you, this is a new type of heaven. You may have a nice 4 by 4, while your neighbor has a horse and cart, and you may have a luxurious swimming pool, while your neighbor an old tin bath in the bath, and a pension you can buy groceries as a whole year in one month – but your neighbors will not mind, they are still going to share with you what they have, still watching for you, so they can greet you with smiles and handshakes … ..

So Bulgaria like Spain 30 years ago? Well in my opinion yes, but Bulgaria is moving faster, learn faster and have honesty about it that Spain lost somewhere along the way – Go and see for yourself – Bulgaria has so much to offer everyone.

Oktoberfest in Munich, also called Wies’n (meaning “meadow”) by locals, is the largest festival in the world. Although there are many imitations of big beer party, none of them will manage to reach the dimensions of the original in Munich Wies’n performed each year in late September and early October. It attracts as many as six million visitors and approximately 6 million liters of beer and a large number of grilled chicken, sausages and pretzels are consumed yearly.

These statistics may seem overwhelming for anyone to not like crowds but Oktoberfest is such a great event that everyone should experience this festival at least once in their life. Miss Oktoberfest and you’ll you’ll lose a great experience and probably a lot of fun too. To make the most of your trip to the Oktoberfest, it is worth planning in advance and there are some important things you should know and prepare yourself for when you go there for the first time.

Oktoberfest was first held in 1810 when Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen Bavaria. Marriage took place on October 12, 1810, and on October 17, the big horse races organized. The event was repeated and in 1819, decided by the city council’s festival will take place every year, no matter what the situation. Since then it has done every year on the Theresienwiese, named “Teresa” of Saxe-Hildburghausen, in Munich for two weeks in late September and early October.

Preparation for Oktoberfest began about two months before the festival opened. Six factories in Munich and about eighty showmen set up a beer hall and various attractions such as ghost trains, roller coasters and other rides playground.

Do not be surprised to see a real city with its own infrastructure like roads, toilets, police, post office, first aid station and even its own waste disposal system. Hundreds of people employed each year just to work there. Oktoberfest is not only boost tourism but also has a huge impact on the economy of Munich.

Due to the popularity and scale of the Oktoberfest, it is highly advisable to book your flight and your hotel well in advance and a few months would be far too short. Prices for flights and hotels usually skyrocket during the Oktoberfest. The same applies if you want to sit in one large beer hall, which are mostly located in one of the main road is also referred to as “Bierzeltstrasse” (beer-hall road). Although the beer hall is very large compared to the usual beer tent, the place has been booked even one year in advance and will be difficult to enter one of them without reservation. You may be lucky in finding a chair outside the room where most beergarden beer. This may be a better option as a beer hall can be very stuffy, hot and hard.

The best way to get Wies’n is to go there by foot. It is about 15 minutes from Munich main station Hauptbahnhof and easy to find. In most cases, you do not even have to ask someone, you just have to follow the crowd. Another way to get there by subway: line of no use. 4 or 5 and get off at the “Theresienwiese” or not. 3 or 6 and get off at “Goetheplatz”. When you use the first option, you will be directly on Wies’n when you leave the underground, from Goetheplatz you will have to walk a few meters. Tram no. 19 also stop near the Oktoberfest. It is not advisable to use a private car or your bike because you will not find a place to park your car. If you come by bike, be sure to leave a safe place but it can be difficult as vandalism by drunken are very common.

Another consideration is to be aware of pickpockets by keeping your stuff. When you use one of the fairground rides (which is better done before drinking beer and eating), then it is best to have your money safely in your pants pocket is closed – otherwise you might just lose it.

Beer drunk in large quantities and weight of 1 liter cup. It’s hard to get regular servings ½ quart but if you’re lucky, you may be able to order a ½ liter Weißbier (“eine Halbe Weißbier”) but this is not the norm. Oktoberfest beer is a special kind of beer that is stronger than regular beer so be careful. If you are not used for drinking, even one 1-liter beverage cup with a strong Oktoberfest is probably too much! Not only beer, but everything is quite expensive at the Wies’n compared with normal prices.

Although there are plenty of toilets at Oktoberfest, especially on the side street next to the beer tent, you may have to wait quite a while. This causes a lot of drunks pee directly on pasture (they call it “wild piss”) and not something that should be recommended as you will be charged if caught by one of the many police around. So, do not be surprised when you see people piss drunk out in the open or lying in a meadow near the main entrance.

Things get worse as the night progresses and it is important to keep a distance when you see a drunk aggressive with a big glass of beer because it can be very dangerous to hit one of them. For many people, the best option is to go to Oktoberfest early enough or even better, for a week. The same applies if you want to attend one of the popular events held on the first weekend as you have to arrive very early to see anything.

On the first Saturday at 10:45, there is a parade of the innkeeper to Wies’n Oktoberfest brewing with lead their horses by the Münchner Kindl and Munich Mayor. The route is from Sonnenstrasse through Schwanthalerstrasse to Theresienwiese. At noon, Maj. Munich taps the first barrel of beer in a beer hall Schottenhammel. On the first Sunday, there is a big parade of traditional costumes and armed gun to Wies’n which began at 11.00 am in Siegestor in Ludwigstrasse in Schwabing.

If you keep in mind everything mentioned here and even lucky with the weather, you will have a great time at Oktoberfest. Just watch the people (many of them are wearing traditional costume), enjoy the Oktoberfest beer and having a good time!

Brussels superbly located for quick-trips to several charming cities in Belgium. Three days’ journey in this article have been highlighted because of their proximity to Europes capital.

Antwerp

Slightly more than half an hour by train from the heart of Brussels is the busy city of Antwerp. If you have a longer stay in Brussels, you will want to have a day here to enjoy the fashion shops are interesting and it’s a nice mix of good restaurants. If you prefer to stay overnight then the abundance of good, clean hotel would be a welcome sight – especially since they cost significantly less than you would pay at Brussels. You can book a hotel from the tourist office in downtown Grote Markt.

Equivalent to the Grand Place for Antwerp is the Grote Markt square is fun. Here are some must-see sights in Antwerp if you just for a short visit:

- After checking out Grote Markt to the Onze Lieve amble Vrouwekathedraal – one of the medieval church of the most impressive to be found anywhere in Belgium, Onze Lieve Vrouwekathedraal dates back to the 15th century.

- Museum lovers will enjoy the Maritime Museum, Museum Rockoxhuis, Momo (a museum dedicated to fashion), Plantin-Moretus Museum and the Museum voor Schone Kunsten (art).

- Quite similar to Brussels, there is no shortage of restaurants and cafes in Antwerp – but significantly less expensive to eat.

Bruges

A little farther than Bruges Brussels from Antwerp, but still comfortably placed for daily travel. It takes about an hour to reach Bruges by train and it was worth the effort if you consider the beauty of this medieval town preserved also offered. Therefore, Bruges can often be packed in peak season and can be difficult to get accommodation so be sure to reserve space in advance if you plan to spend the night. Being a tourist hotspot, eating out in Bruges can be somewhat more expensive than anywhere else in Belgium, and the food tends to satisfy the mass number of tourists who flood the city during peak times.

Once you get into the heart of Bruges, it’s not surprising to learn that it’s one of the most visited places in Belgium – there is a beautiful medieval charm here, including ancient buildings, the streets narrow and winding ancient network of criss-crossing canals.

- If you do not take enough chocolate in Brusses do not worry – Bruges has more than enough Belgian chocolate shop to maintain your cravings satisfied.

Ghent

Ghent is severely under-rated as a tourist. With it’s ancient city center consisting of a narrow canal, traffic-free cobbled streets & fortress and cathedral smooth a very attractive place to plan day-trips to. It’s also just a half hour train ride from Brussels.

Here are the must-see sights in Ghent if you happen to come for short stays:

- Fabrics of Ghents downtown was built in the 13th century and 14. As Brussels is very easy to navigate through Ghent thanks to a comprehensive transportation system and well-managed society. Your first port of call should be to Stadhius impressive (the biggest town hall in Belgium) that dates back to the beginning of the 15th century. Close-by, Belfort was built in the 14th century and offers stunning views over the city.

- Walk along the river Leie for one of the most enjoyable runs available anywhere in Belgium.

- Ghent has a large selection of restaurants, cafes and bars and they range from pokey student type affairs to more elegant and expensive offerings. South of the city is known for its student population so you’re more likely to find young people here. There is a wide selection of options throughout the city – from the traditional Belgian fare to Thailand, Italy and Asia.

- If you plan to stay the night you should be able to find a room that meets your requirements. Accommodation is usually fairly easy to secure (except for July when the city hosts Gentse Feesten). It’s possible to secure the basic space from as little as € 25 – or if you can afford something more extravagant you can sleep in style for 400 euros.

If you live in Brussels extends to a week or more, you should certainly consider the day-trip to at least one of the beautiful cities of Belgium.

Thousands of visitors come to Hilton Head Island every summer for pristine beaches, high-grade small-town atmosphere, and a vacation resort. But this place is fun in other seasons, too! Because the main location at the southern end of Hilton Head of South Carolina coastline, temperatures here are pleasant-rarely see Hilton Head Island Flood snow, even in the middle of winter. Not only the weather is nice all year, but there is so much to do!

Hilton Head Island in winter without the hustle and bustle of the summer, allowing for the environment, more relaxed relaxed. Off-season visitors will find a more reasonable price for the holidays and accommodation, than they will pay during the summer months are very busy, but can also indulge in one of dozens of family-centered activities. For example, Coastal Carolina Arts Center has scheduled exhibitions of contemporary art and photography, as well as appearances by various entertainers including the likes of Groucho Marx (played by actor Frank Ferrante)! Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra will present some of the music-filled evening including BrahmsFest 2007, in response to the excellent reception of BeethovenFest 2006.

Another annual celebration is planned for autumn / winter / spring, including Festival of Trees in November, the Community Festival in October, Trolley Tours of Hilton Head Island featuring the best Christmas decorations in mid-December, and Christmas Homes Tour by the Hilton Head Choral Society highlights the six estates beautiful dripping with luxurious decor. Islands also enjoy taking a slow drive through the North Coast Forest to see the festive holiday displays-no entry fee required, though the contribution to the Fund Deep Well driven city. And Harbourtown’s popular musician, Gregg Russell, who did his Christmas concert just before the holidays.

Islands and visitors without other Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day plan is to issue an open invitation to sit elbow-to-elbow with their neighbors’ holiday dinner now-traditional communities. Members of St Andrew-by-the-Sea United Methodist Church hosts first Thanksgiving dinner for free at House on the Docks Seafood Hudson in 1999, and it continues to eat has grown into such a beloved ritual that gave birth to a similar annual party at Sticky finger Rib House on Christmas Day.

Summer is a great time to vacation at the beach here, but dozens of sporting events are scheduled for the winter. Thanksgiving Turkey Tennis Tournament, Candy Cane Classic golf tournament Hilton Head, South Carolina Chef Classic golf tournament, the MCI Junior Heritage in February followed by the MCI Heritage Golf in April, and the U.S. Open golf qualifying tournament May is one of the best deals and athletic . Hilton Head Celebrity Golf Tournament The annual other in September.

Additional events, like Taste of the Season cuisine extravaganza at Sea Pines Country Club or Club Concert Jazz Lover, happens all the time during the off-season on Hilton Head Island. For nature enthusiasts, bird watching tours and cruises during the day the dolphins are available every month of the year. Routine, daily activities such as bowling (Main Street Lanes) and cinema (Hilton Head has three, two regular, multi-screen movie theater complex and one independent in Coligny Plaza) provides a low-key night out. And do not forget the island salon and spa experience for both couples and individuals, schedule a massage or a full day spa package for a vacation de-emphasized.

Hilton Head Island has a great reputation for summer vacation and romantic, but it does not mean visitors have to ignore it during the off-season months. Hilton Head has many fun activities, romantic settings, casual concerts, sporting events loud, family oriented entertainment and fresh for winter tourists who will keep the mind away from the beach.

The annual Concours d’Elegance is a celebration of automotive history, held in early November at the base of Honey Horn Plantation. Proud owner drove them rare, classic, and antique entire island road, often wearing makeup period. A wave to drivers who may be getting happy “Ahh-Oo-Gah!” gust response, along with a big smile around!

When the weather gets crisp and cold water, the oyster roast begins! This salty-sweet fat mollusks are pulled from local waters with a bushel and steamed over an open fire under wet burlap wrap. Hissing with steam, cooked oysters drenched in hot butter and lemon sauce and eaten by a visitor who brings a knife, then rinsed off with plenty of sweet tea or a cold beer! Many clubs and civic groups use oyster roasts to fund their projects. Of course, the island understand that oysters can not appeal to all tastes; Other festivities include chili cook-off, wine fests, soup challenge, and “Low Country boils” featuring shrimp, corn, onions, potatoes, & sausage all cooked together together in a spicy broth.

Investing in real local Hilton Head is actually an interesting and beneficial “to-do” between the summer. Potential buyers may find their dream homes with price tags are lower during the winter. During the holiday-season break, when the rental income is lower, owners often consider selling or “trading up” investment property. Opportunity to “buy a piece of paradise” make autumn and winter the ideal time to get acquainted with Hilton Head Island.

The best thing about Hilton Head Island is the hotspot throughout the year. World-class beaches during, summer golf tournament and concert when it’s cold, and a number of spas, first-class restaurants, and resort is open all year Hilton Head expose the true character of a perfect vacation getaway for every season.

My theory is that a real traveler is able to find things that are attractive even in the most unlikely places. Well, Buffalo probably not make the “main purpose trip” list for a while, but I’ve done some research on it and I think it’s time to explore the Buffalo, the closest American city to Toronto, south of Niagara Falls and right across the border in Fort Erie.

So fellow travel lovers and architecture Shauna and I went early yesterday morning to make the 2 hour trip to Buffalo. We chose the Fort Erie border and fortunately was not very busy.

Approaching the city we immediately took a wrong turn and headed south on Highway 5 away from downtown. But we must look at Buffalo beach, a marina in this area include a rather spectacular and some old rundown industrial buildings. We turned itself around and headed back downtown. Because the tourist information office is closed on Sunday we thought we would stop at the Hampton Inn & Suites Hotel to pick up some tourist brochures and city maps. Another pleasant experience: The lady at the front desk very helpful, providing us with a brochure some printouts on how to get to two of the most important heritage sites in Buffalo architecture: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House and other important Buffalo work, Graycliff Mansion.

After parking the car on Delaware Avenue at about 10:30 am, the one thing that surprised us immediately was how empty the streets. There was hardly any foot traffic at all and very few vehicles passing by.

We parked our car close to Niagara Square and started exploration on foot. First on the agenda is the Buffalo City Hall, Art Deco skyscraper that monumental completed in 1931, built of orange-colored stone with intricate details and colorful ornaments.

We do a small circle in the center and cover the building some really exciting. Red color and detailed ornamentation of Louis Sullivan Building Guarantee really caught our imagination. We pass St Paul’s Cathedral and past the Main Street trolley tracks we found Elicott House Square. Eastern entrance to the building was actually open so we entered. This building was founded in 1896 according to designs by Daniel Burnham, one of Chicago’s most famous architects. This building was built around a large interior court covered by a glass block ceiling held by a steel frame decorated. We commented on how similar this design is one of Chicago’s most famous buildings, “rookery”, and it was not until this morning I realized that both buildings were created by the same architect.

This is an extraordinary building impresses with beautiful sweeping staircase and intricate mosaic covering the entire page. From the Field House Ellicot we headed to the Hotel Lafayette, a handsome red brick and white terra cotta French Renaissance-style building built in anticipation of the expected influx of visitors at the Pan-American Exposition in 1901. Due to financial difficulties, but it was not opened until 1904. From there we checked out the General Electric Tower, a handsome white Terracotta clad structure dating back to 1912.

Electricity tower right next to the building by chance another interesting: Buffalo Savings Bank, Buffalo building boom of realizing the second half of the 19th century. In the late 1890s – peak of the golden age of Buffalo – the bank held a competition for a new headquarters. Contest was won by Green & Wicks, turn-of-the-century Buffalo major architectural firms. Their design projected stability, security, and the signature feature is a domed building aspiration. The gold leaf.

After the Buffalo Savings Bank we explored the Genesee Building which is currently the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Just as we finished exploring that building the heavens opened and there is heavy rain so we sat in front of the Hyatt and took in the street scene. We are facing Main Street, the road is now a pedestrian zone and holds the line light rail rapid transit Buffalo. One thing we noticed consistently in Buffalo is the absence of street-level shops and restaurants. Many modern administrative buildings in Buffalo have a rather strong feelings and the non-welcome, and several new buildings dating back to the 50s and then have jail almost feel them. The resulting scarcity of street-level store fronts combined with the utter lack of pedestrians (certainly on the weekend) really gives downtown Buffalo a rather eerie deserted feel, and the absence of the city center of our most striking impression of Buffalo. Judging from the classic styled street lamps with blooming planters, however, the city seems to have been working on beautifying the city center.

We started back in the car and past the Hotel Statler, which is not actually a hotel anymore, but apparently a building full of lawyer’s office. We have seen in the impressive lobby which features French chandeliers from the early 20th century. I took some pictures, but the security guard stopped me, told me photography is not allowed. We were really interesting chat after this long and he commented on the economic problems of Buffalo and how in his opinion, the current mayor is only making things worse. One example of the economic problems the city is that the grand ballroom at the Hotel Statler only recently reopened after being closed since 1957. Furthermore, building owners had previously tried to create a food court in the basement and had opened the main floor, but ran out of money before the food court could be built. So now you have an opening rather prominent on the ground floor with views to the empty basement without stores or food outlets. Contact us also comment on the reasons why the city of Buffalo was without a man, and he said that all the locals buy them in suburban malls and big warehouse stories. That, combined with the economic woes of the city, seems to have created a flight to the suburbs that has left the city’s core rather lifeless on the weekend.

Well, we had to move to our other tourist gems of architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House. Darwin Martin was a high level executive with the Larkin Soap Company and brother-in-law had encouraged Darwin to seek the work of Wright in Oak Park, a suburb of Chicago. After familiarizing himself with Wright’s work, he brought him to Buffalo in November 1902 to build a house for his brother, Barton House, with a size of about 4000 feet, and then to build the main house, a 15,000 square foot Prairie Style home, characterized by Wright’s rigorous and consistent cross plan, the pier and cantilevers, and the principles of other prairie home. After years of neglect, Martin house is now under renovation to restore back to its original grandeur of an authentic early 1900′s.

Now the empty buildings and some great photographs illustrate the former decor and furnishings. It’s very visible that this building has been neglected for a long time and the Martin House Restoration Corporation is working very hard to return back to the authentic 1907 characteristics, even to the level of rebuilding the pergola and the coach house which was destroyed by a previous owner. The tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and provided by the tour guides are very excited and all the volunteer staff at the gift shop and the chaperone were very helpful. We even received a glass of water in the 60s style kitchen of House Martin will be torn out and replaced with more authentic furnishings as the renovation continues.

After the damp heat inside the Martin and Barton Houses we were glad to get out to cool. We passed Park East Side Historic District surrounding Delaware Park, the creation of the famous landscape designer Frederick Law Olmstead, who also designed Central Park. The area around Delaware Park and Forest Lawn Cemetery is a beautiful part of town with houses and beautifully manicured lawns, and beauty is most visible on Millionaires Row ‘along Delaware Avenue. There is more traffic and street life in the Buffalo, the atmosphere pleasant and impressive residential areas.

We headed to the nearby Niagara River and drove along the Seaway Trail, crossed Grand Island and continued on the outskirts of Niagara Falls, NY, right along the Niagara River to Lewiston. Drive north of Niagara Falls State Park Fort Niagara on Lake Ontario is gorgeous, with old houses overlooking the beautiful Niagara River, huge trees hanging 2-lane country road, with well kept properties on either side of the road. Our lovely greasy lunch outside, enjoying the breeze (hey, you do not have to eat healthy every day) and then continued our journey all the way to Fort Niagara State Park, admiring the villas and estates.

We have chosen to cross the border at the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge, but construction work had caused confusing detours and a local New York State father and son team stopped their car when they saw us in the street, staring at maps, trying to figure how to get to the border . They rolled down the window and said they would guide us to the bridge, which they did. We followed them for about 10 minutes through the maze of detour signs until we found the bridge and headed back to Canada. We were both very impressed with the friendliness and helpful locals.

Back on the Canadian side we drove along the Niagara Parkway and stopped at the beautiful little village of Niagara-on-the-Lake. NOTL calls itself “the prettiest village in Ontario”, and they may be right. The village is home to a beautifully maintained Victorian homes, overflowing flower baskets, souvenir shops, cafes, bed and breakfasts, as well as the renowned Shaw Festival, and for many Ontarians it is a favorite destination for a quick weekend getaway.

From Niagara-on-the-Lake we headed through vineyards and orchards to St. Catharines, and to the Port Dalhousie area of beach entertainment, do not forget to stop by the road-side fruit stall to buy ripe red cherries and nuclear-size apricots fresh from the tree . About 20 minutes from NOTL, Port Dalhousie harbor marina and pier length and variety of outdoor terrace restaurant, ice cream parlors, souvenir shops and other entertainment.

The atmosphere in Port Dalhousie was almost like the California seaside resort town with rollerbladers, walkers, beach volleyball players, boaters and pedestrians stroll leisurely through the village and on the dock. The sun began to set up and the lake laid out before us like an ocean, with no shoreline visible on the other. It’s a beautiful summer evening and I feel like I want to spend a whole week in this place happen. But no luck, we should go back to Toronto after our exciting girls-only trip to Buffalo and Niagara Peninsula.

We have to explore some outstanding architectural gems, connected with the legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright, a lovely greasy lunch right next to the Niagara River, enjoying the hospitality and the usefulness of the local population York State New, and back in home territory, we jump all Lake Ontario shore to enjoy fresh fruit, frozen yogurt and extraordinary afternoon relaxing on the beach. Does not get much better than that …..

A pleasant culture shock awaits you once you arrive in Morocco. It is as geographically diverse rich culture and can not fail to impress. Visited several towns and villages and experience the generosity of its people will leave you hooked, like me, by the Arab experience.

Fez

Fez is the cultural and spiritual center of the bustling Moroccan.

The main attraction is the Medieval Medina in colorful old town, which has been continuously inhabited since the 10th century. It is busy with the traditional Moroccan dress, and rich with sound buying and selling, veiled women going about their work and bell-ringing water sellers.

A tour is the easiest way to overcome the buzzing hive of traditional Fez, but if you dare, you can negotiate the tiny alleyways, too narrow for cars while the risk of getting lost and then haggling with a local to be guided back!

Tannery: A visit to these markets will lead to a visit to Fez’s famous tanneries, where one of the world’s oldest arts practiced to produce a typical Moroccan soft leather.

You will need a strong stomach for the smell given off during curing, while you look down on the page tanners interesting and impressive vats of different colored dyes and piles of skins. Open 9-6, admission free.

View Point: The point of view the best of the ancient walled city is the Tomb of Merenid destroyed on a hilltop east of town. From here you can see the sky with the profession over the satellite dish, and the general mass of palaces, green-roofed holy places, tanning leather, as well as adjacent Karaouine Mosque.

Moulay Idriss will: In the depths of the old city sits the shrine that houses the remains of the founder of the city of Fez Idriss, Moulay II. This is one of the holiest buildings in the city. Non-Muslims can not enter, but you can look inside to see the sacred tomb, which receives a constant pilgrimage of a group of women who burn candles and incense.

Marrakech

Walking through the alleyways and souks of Marrakech, particularly in the Medina old city, is easy to believe you have been taken back in time for the “Arabian Nights”.

This enchanting atmosphere that brings thousands of travelers the most visited cities of Morocco.
Medina characterized by much, with the noise and bustle of merchants and craftsmen going about the tasks of their daily cloth dying, copper beating or leather working, as well as shamans, fragrances and a shoemaker.

Snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas Mountains form a beautiful backdrop for the city, although they are often hidden by the haze of heat.

Djemaa el-Fna: In the heart of the Medina. This is an irregular ‘square’ and a hub of action where tourists flock to soak up the atmosphere of busy. Tourism, though, is not spoiled, but rather added to the complete picture.

Marrakesh has a modern side with luxury hotels, banks and streets filled with motor scooters, while the middle with the past of the old town.

Marrakech was founded in 1062 by Youssef bin Tachfine of Almoravide dynasty, and his son perfected the city by bringing Andalusian architects and craftsmen from Córdoba to build palaces, baths, mosques and underground water systems. The city wall is lifted from the red mud from the plains.

Horse drawn carriage: Known as calèches, is one of the best ways to see the city when you do not walk to explore the Medina.

Koutoubia Mosque: This is the city’s main landmark and the 69-meter high tower which rises in the maze of streets and markets in the Medina. Red stone mosque was first built in 1147 but was knocked down and rebuilt in 1199 because it has not been built correctly aligned with Mecca. The mosque is large enough for thousands to pray in.

Djemaa el-Fna: the square of the city is translated as “Square for the Dead”. This square offers a view of colorful and magnetic performance artist, snake charmer, musicians, storytellers and healers, all vying for attention. Passing merchants to offer something from boiled snails, vegetable soup and kebabs fresh orange juice. There are many cafés here from which to watch the busy scene, and from which you can then visit the markets to find some color from the sun burn Morocco.

Agadir offers 300 days of sunshine and a huge supply of hotel beds, reputedly a quarter of the total in Morocco.

Rabat

Morocco typical modern capital city with wide streets conservative, gardens and large blocks of flats. King lived in a beautiful palace surrounded by trees and flowers.

Despite having a rich history dating back to the 7th century, Rabat is far from the busy alley Fez and Marrakech. But the old section of town has the Medina and Kasbah.
Rabat is located in the Atlantic coastal plain, opposite its twin city of Sale, and it is near some beautiful sandy beaches.

The palace gardens and terraces provide Andalusia and the beautiful scenery of the Kasbah mosque, over the river and the sea. Palace Museum and gardens date back to the 17th century. Also other artifacts from Phoenician, Carthaginian and Roman settlements throughout Morocco to be seen here. Open 9.00 to 11.30 and 2.30 to 5.30, closed Tuesday.

When Spain gave Tangiers returned to Morocco in 1960, duty-free status went with it, along with the fashionable crowd. Decayed grandeur of today still has a lot to offer and slowly Tangier is regaining its beauty as an attractive tourist destination.

Large Socco: Socco means Souk in Spanish and is named so because of the legacy of the Spanish. A Souk is a market for us and is an interesting place to watch passing Rif people in colorful costumes selling vegetables and fresh mint. It starts at the square and the medina relievers entered from the square, through a large arched entrance.

Kasbah: dates back to the 17th century and is interesting to wonder through the small alleys, patios and hidden terraces. Kasbah Mosque offers unusual octagonal tower.

Sultan Gardens, Rue Riad Sultan, just north of the Kasbah Mosque, is a nice place to visit and watch local artisans work while sipping mint tea and enjoying views over the Strait of Gibraltar to Tarifa on the Spanish coast, only 14.5 km.

Dar el Makhzen: This is a 17th-century palace containing and collections of art from all regions of Morocco.

Museum is the former palace of the United States-and multi-millionaire media magnate, Malcolm Forbes. The house is open to the public and houses a collection of Forbes’ than 8,000 miniature soldiers!

Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen was first settled by Spanish Muslim refugees in the middle-age and retains its distinctive character of Spain. This is just one hour’s drive from Tangier in the Rif Mountains.

Medina is a beautiful and bustling with craftsmen working hard and merchants selling regular fare carpets, leather goods, pottery and copper tools. Great Mosque, in the middle of the medina dates to the 17th century sits on a beautiful square with restaurants and cafes.

Quick Tips / Suggestions:

If you would enjoy yourself in Athens, you better get in shape and bring comfortable walking shoes and plenty of water. Most of the city’s famous sites require either walking uphill, or walking along the stony road. And beware the marble staircase, no matter where you go: they are very slippery!

I took a bus tour of the city on my first day in Athens and it’s worth the money. Tour including the Acropolis, and take in the region to the Olympic Stadium, Syntagma Square, the Temple of Zeus’ and an important tourist sites. This is a good way to make the introduction to the city and plan the rest of my trip.

How is the food? Simple neighborhood restaurant that is your best bet. They serve cheap, tasty fare and truly local. Fancy restaurants in places like Plaka expensive, and you are more likely to see fried chicken on the menu, from the gyro or souvlaki. And word of caution: go easy on this Ouzo! Things down too easily, and after finishing half a bottle with dinner, I slept for 12 hours and had drunk the next day.

Where to stay? Many hotels and hostels in Athens. Rooms do not get booked up during the high season – so book early. The quality and standards may vary as other purposes. Location and price should be your top priority. A good website to review the client www.tripadvisor.com. For good deals on various hotels and other hotels Athens Greece Greek Network Cybertravel check the website at www.hotels-Greece-athens.com.

How To Get Around:

Athens taxi allegedly has more per capita than any other city in the world. Having said that, in fact, almost impossible to call the bottom of an empty during rush hour. Often taxi will slow down and pull to curb and the cab driver would ask “Pou,? ‘Which means’ where.” Just a shout in which you want to go (preferably Greek), and if you’re lucky it will be on the trip. I can not say anything in good faith about the truth of a taxi driver in Athens. I took a cab three times, and twice I was ripped off, so make your own conclusions.

In my view the best way to get around Athens is by bus or train. Tickets are inexpensive and available at kiosks along any path. Make sure you cancel the tickets at the ticket machine as soon as you enter a bus or trolley. There are lots of ticket controllers around to catch you if you are traveling without a ticket, or if you forget to stamp it.

Things to see around Athens:

Acropolis

Athens Acropolis is the most recognizable sites, stunning and shocking. Acropolis is actually the name of the hill upon which there are three main temples: the Parthenon, the Temple of Athena Nike and Erechteion, as well as the Acropolis Museum and the Propylaea, which is the original entrance to the Acropolis.

Being a fan of archeology and the study of classical Greek, I was really fascinated by that place. The total size of the Parthenon is incredible, when you understand it was built 2,500 years ago. Museum houses artifacts found in the temples on the Acropolis, which was placed there to avoid weather damage.

Acropolises is a hill, and a fairly steep, so take good quality walking shoes and bottled water with you when you leave. And take the steps carefully, because the steps are very slippery marble. I introduced myself to marble the hard way: face first, and let me tell you: it’s not a pleasant experience.

On the road to the Acropolis there are peddlers selling souvenir postcards, pictures of papyrus and other trinkets. They sell the same type and quality of the souvenir as a museum gift shop but at half the price. I recommend loading up on souvenirs from them on the road out of the Acropolis.

Temple of Olympian Zeus

The temple is one of two remaining sections on the site Olympieion. The size of this incredible monument to say! There are only a few original Corinthian columns left of the original 104! This is a site that is ideal for sitting on a sunny day with a gyro in your hand and just admire its beauty.

An interesting fact about the Temple of Olympian Zeus is that it took almost 700 years to build. It began in 515 BC by Peristratos and completed in 125 AD by Roman Emperor Hadrian.

Close to the temple, in Amalias Avenue, you can look more closely at other monuments are left – Hadrian’s Arch, built a few years later by the same emperor. During my visit was all covered in plastic for the reconstruction, so it is not very inspiring.

The Agoras – Ancient and Roman

Ancient Agora (Agora Arkhaia) is a gathering place for ancient Athenians. It’s hard to say now, since almost nothing is left from the original structure. Hephaisteion (Temple of Hephaistos) is an exception. It’s quite a monument and perhaps the best preserved of all Greek temples in Athens. Stoa of Attalos, which was completely reconstructed, houses the museum of the ancient Agora and a resting place for most of the artifacts found here.

Roman Agora (Agora Romaiki) is located near another. It is much smaller, and the site is much younger than the Ancient Agora. Some interesting things to see here is that the mosque Turkey: Fethiye Djami, and the Tower of the Winds.

I marked this site as a Recommendation, not Highly Recommended because unless you have a real interest in archeology or history, you might just get fed up here. There is not much to see, besides Hephaisteion, because most of the monument is almost completely destroyed. But if you’re a fan of historical / archaeological, have an extra day, or happen to get bored in Plaka, than by all means stop here and do a little exploration.

Panathenaic Stadium

Panathenaic Stadium is the site of modern Olympic Games in 1896. His name, Panathinaikon, stands for “All the Stadium of Athens”. It has been reconstructed at the original stadium. The stadium is one place that just gives you a feeling of good quality in it. You are welcome to run laps around, or to see the marble slabs documenting all the modern Olympic Games. In front of the stadium is the sculpture Discus Thrower.

Kerameikos Cemetery

This one is quite beautiful! I’m used to the traditional burial place is not serious where people come to worship or to remember. Kerameikos no. In fact, viewed by people sitting on the tombstone, or lying around the bikini get a tan, you will not know the cemetery. But you can not fault anyone; no one has been buried here for over a thousand years.

So against my original feelings, I have to recommend this site as a place of fun relaxation: a place to sit and read books, straighten legs and relax or just sunbathing. Oh … There is also a museum here that shows some items cemetery, gravestones, urns, etc.

The ruins of Delphi

A visit to the Delphi site is an absolute must for history buffs. Plan a full day for a trip like that is about three hours away by bus or car.

Temple of Apollo is the main attraction of this site. Preserved magnificent temple is a place Pythia, the High Priestess of Apollo will be asked to predict the future, and in return he will give you an answer very inexplicable (and they are not always good).

Theatre of the sanctuary and stadium are located higher on the site (approximately 10 minutes walk). Not quite as eye-catching, and can be avoided by those who climb proved too much.

And of course you can not miss the Archaeological Museum of Delphi, which houses artefacts found at these sites. And luckily it’s located at the base of the site, so climbing is not required.

Plaka

Plaka is a tourist heaven. This is very similar to the Montmartre district of Paris. There are hundreds and even thousands of simple souvenir shops, bars, liquor stores, churches and small open-air stand where you can buy everything from produce to pottery vase for olive oil soap. This is where you should visit on your last day in Athens when you want to load at cheap souvenirs. You do not really see all that many locals here, at least proportionate to the thousands of tourists passing every minute. And Goddess, do not forget to bring a map! Plaka is a labyrinth, the road network which all look the same.

There are many places to eat in Plaka, but most are looking for luxury tends to be very expensive and not really a good offer from the local fare. Small restaurant take-out spot or small is the best choice for food in there. Gyros they may grease wrappers, but they taste good and you’ll have money left over for those souvenirs.

One thing I found when purchasing souvenirs in Plaka, the price of goods is almost never the price you would pay if you play your cards right. In some stores, the owner will tell you soon “Today 20 percent discount ‘or’ more you buy, the bigger discount ‘. But as a general rule, you have to barter. You’re stupid if you do not, because you will only pay more for everything. Everyone bargain here, both locals and tourists. And if the store owners are reluctant to make a deal, put the items you are looking at and say you should look elsewhere. They will most likely change their songs and offered money from immediately!

National Archaeological Museum in Athens

If you will look at any museum on your trip to Athens, see this one. It is the largest archaeological museum in Greece and most inspiring. Even the building itself is quite something to see. This museum has exhibits quite different, but certainly the most interesting is the Greek pottery and sculpture, which also happens to take the most space. There are also art exhibits and artifacts of prehistoric Egypt and Bronze Age.

The museum is easily accessible by various buses from any point in town. It’s big and can easily take a full day, but in contrast to the Louvre in Paris, this museum contains such a diversity of things, which I find very easy to spend several hours admiring the fruit without any boredom.

One final note, although the type of museum is the Museum of Art this country, it really is a mixture of the Art Museum / History / Culture. I want to make clear, so I do not scare people-conscious art.

National Gardens

National Gardens, which can be accessed behind the Tomb of Unknown Soldier, offers a great escape from all the hustle and bustle of the city. Seeing the crowds, I have a feeling they are a trendy hang-out spot for locals. This is a nice place for a leisurely stroll or a brown bag lunch. At the heart of the park there is a structure called Zappion neoclassical, which I’ve been told is used for political and cultural events that are important (a security guard told me the entry of Greece into the European Union was signed here). It’s quite eye-catching structure worth checking out if you appreciate architecture.

It is also a good place to talk with the locals if you wish. I stopped at the pretzel stand run by a Kurdish immigrant and immediately get into a discussion about the fate of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan (who was imprisoned at the time by Turkey). Not that I speak any Kurdish or Greek, or the owners stand any English, but amazingly enough use of hand-movement, and the combination of British, Greek, German and the word ‘caput’, somehow we come to the understanding that he was a reply vanish and we both support his cause. After that, I immediately ripped off for pretzels, but … it’s for a good cause.

Constitution Square

Syntagma (Constitution) Square is positioned at the center of Athens and a pretty good starting point for tourists. There is a bank where you can exchange money, travel agent where you can retrieve information on what to see in Athens or book a tour bus and some hotels are quite luxurious.

Top tourist attraction is the Tomb of Unknown Soldier Field were supervised by guards dressed EVZONE, which is the Greek traditional costumes of men consisting of skirt and white shirt, red vest and hat and shoes with pompons. They look rather attractive! The best time to see the change of guard is Sunday at noon, when the service is a big place. I believe that the initial event starts at around 11 or 11:30, when a battalion of soldiers began marching in the streets with military bands playing. As they approached the tomb, they stopped systematically, wait until noon, then the changing of the guard ceremony begins. It’s really quite interesting because there are so many customs and ceremonies involved. The soldiers took steps long caution: I am amazed to see how they maintain their balance while standing on one leg.

Not much more to see in Syntagma Square itself, but from here you will have easy access to National Parks, as well as the Plaka and Omounia Square. Somehow, every day I was in Athens starting and ending here.

Three Island Cruise

It is worth the time and money. I ordered a cruise through the Network Cybertravel www.hotels-Greece-athens.com one of about a dozen travel agencies offer tours identical (later I found a lot of tour agencies use the same boat, which can carry several hundred people). It was very well planned: in the morning a van picked me up from the hotel and dropped me off where the air-conditioned coach took us to the harbor. From there, it’s several hours of sailing to our first port of call: Hydra. What a magnificent, relaxing little place! White houses, red roofs, blue water and sky, around 25 Celsius … and that in Feburary! Shopper’s paradise of course, with souvenir shops everywhere. We moved into the shaft, during lunch served on board. Poros, Hydra is not so quiet like me. That’s more commercial, reminds me a bit Honolulu, Hawaii. But it’s a great place to take a bowl of ice cream and just a little space in the harbor. From there we moved to Aegina and offered to pay for an optional bus tour on Aegina to the Temple Aphaia.

Bus tour well worth the money. Aphaia temple in Aegina very well maintained and amazing site to see. Aegina is also an excellent place to buy pistachio nuts: there are vendors all over the place, so take one or two bags on the way out!

The back of the yacht is very relaxing. It’s on board entertainment: bands comedians, live, Greek folk dances etc. I chose to just kick back with a bottle of retsina (Greek wine) and watch a screen that is quite enjoyable. Upon arrival, the coaches down every person from returning to their hotel.

Dealing with the Athenians

Athens (or possibly Greek) is one of a kind type of person. Very talkative, is not inhibited and almost all are very curious. Now, of course, this is my opinion and they are very personal to what I experienced, so anyone who disagrees with this view should bear this in mind.

This temperament has proved to be somewhat remarkable on many occasions. Almost every day, I went to the same small restaurant owned by a family in Kifissias called ‘Ta Salona’. In addition to having good quality food, the owners also very curious. Every night, we sat on top of a beer bottle the Greek ‘Mythos’ or a glass of Ouzo (killer stuff!) And discuss where I come from, living in Athens, food, drinks … etc. It really made for a fun night.

Another example of an extrovert nature frightened me out a bit. On several occasions while walking in the Plaka, I asked people walking by what time it is, or how to get somewhere and after receiving an answer, the man said “You want to go to a bar, drinking Ouzo?” Now … I’m sure there’s nothing wrong with asking someone to go drinking with you but I need a little surprised. Coming from the U.S., I feel that if I receive an offer like this from strangers, I’ll probably end up in wrestling biker-bar, the hand with a 300-pound man called ‘Bulldog’. A British woman, I met a few days before the cruise to the islands told me that he was approached several times in the street by complete strangers either asking her out or make remarks like ‘He’s tall! I’m sure he’s really good ‘.

If I draw conclusions from this incident, if you ignore these people, they will go down in due course subject. However, in locations such as restaurants or bars, it really proved really interesting to talk to the locals and learn a bit about their daily lives.

There is no denying that it has become more and more difficult to fly without running into obstacles or problems with airports or airlines. Enduring the line at the security checkpoint at some airports is enough to put some passengers in a bad mood. However, despite all the inconveniences that come with flying, it is a necessity. There are some things you can do to make flying easier and more hassle-free, and all those involved is a little common sense and planning.

1. Get to Airport Early
Arriving at the airport early is a no-brainer, especially when the airlines tell passengers to arrive at least two hours before flight departure time was. However, there are many people who refuse to heed this request, and arrives at the airport just minutes before the flight scheduled to leave. If no line at check-in counters or security, this could create a very stressful situation. Not only may the flight be missed, but the new flight must be booked, and the passengers will probably have to travel stand-by on the next flight without any guarantee of the chair until the last minute.

2. Take a Morning Flight.
Leave at the beginning of the flight is not necessarily a 4:00 flight to be selected. However, flights that leave first thing in the morning are less likely too late, and they tend not to be affected by weather problems across the country and / or other aircraft that may be delayed at other airports. Also, if for some reason the first flight of the day were canceled or delayed, there may be several other flights throughout the day, if necessary, can be taken instead.

3. Try Not Fly During “Rush Hour”
Airports, like highways, have a rush hour. Typically, rush hour in the morning is 8:30 to 10:00, and 16:30 to 6:30 in the afternoon hours when the airport This is the most crowded with people waiting for flights. Mass mean longer lines at security checkpoints, more people in the toilet, more people waiting in restaurant lines, and more people take up a chair in the waiting room. NON-hour flight on time-rush days may reduce the need to stand in line and sitting in a crowd.

4. Try to Take Non-Stop Flights
Obviously, when a non-stop flight is taken, there is less risk of delay. Take off and landing both take a little time, thus avoiding the need to do this twice is recommended. There will always be the goal when a non-stop flight is not available, but there are many cities where non-stop flights that stop just plain like it. It may even be worth a little extra money to book a nonstop flight to avoid unnecessary complexity and possible delays.

5. Book Connections with Enough Time
If the non-stop flight is not available for the desired destination, be sure to schedule enough time between flights. When airlines book, they often have a layover requirement of 30 or 45 minutes between connections. However, this is often not enough time if the original flight was late. To avoid this stress, try to schedule connecting flights with at least an hour to spare between the arrival time of the first flight and flight departure time.
